J’ai Contendre Radio Show
March 3, 2009
Fresh Out The Frying Pan…
Well what Can I say, I decided to ask these guys to do a radio show for two reasons 1. their enthusiasm for music and 2. their taste in beats be it arsh-and-tasty or smooth and liquatic (yes, I just made that up). I use the expression fresh out the frying pan and into the fire because these guys are not yet out of high school, making them the most promising ‘act’ I’ve seen in years. This is what they have to say about this particular show…
This is a belated mix due to the current economic climate, but not to worry. It is basically just us two throwing together some banging Techno music that we have been into at the moment, music that everybody should really be into at the moment. It’s a little rough at the moment but effective nonetheless. Enjoy.xxx
…as you guys can see this show is all about the techno! You might want to save it for the weekend or Monday morning, I’ve used it for both!
When I asked them to provide me with a little photo of themselves they sent me a scanned photo taken with a film camera; I hope I’m building a picture of these guys characters.

For your pleasure

Maschine From Native Instruments
February 23, 2009
Native Instrument - Maschine…looks pretty cool!
Well I’m sure you have all seen the picture or video that Native Instrument have been passing about the internet on the run up to the release of Maschine their new production tool! Maschine isn’t just a sampler it’s a stand alone ‘Beat Laboratory’ (love that phrase) that will plug in to almost every production tool worth using. I’ll let Native Instrument tell you all the features:
I love the way Maschine looks, it has those big punchy buttons which are great! I’ve not used it yet so I can’t pass judgement but as soon as I get my fingers on one I will let y’all know what I really think of Maschine.
But if you can wait for that you can pick Maschine up at dolphin music for £ 549.00

Is it possible to remind of both Sloan and Brian Jonestown Massacre? Springhouse formed in 1988, before either band was a glimmer in the Canadians or Anton’s eye. A NY band that hasn’t toured since 94, hasn’t released a record in 10 years, Springhouse’s From Now to OK is what you might call a labor of love. In recent memory there are a slew of NY bands that won’t ever make it to whatever form rock "stardom" takes these days, but how many of them will be able to create a record of pop gems in 2018? That’s just what Springhouse has done. These dudes are not re-inventing the wheel, but you can’t fault 3 guys who like jamming together for creating some truly catchy pop tunes.

"18 inch speakers, sealin’ my doom" - I’m not entirely certain what that means, but it sure as hell sounds good hurtling out of Chris Thomson’s mouth, along with all the other jagged shards of speech. Red Eyed Legends’ Wake Up, Legend drops today on an unselfrespecting public, except those of us wise enough to download their last RCRD LBL exclusive. "Libido Incognito" is another dose of straightjacket rock ‘n’ roll, designed to nestle on the backside of your brain and pick fights with your ego. Download the track, buy the record, reconsider your Halloween costume.

Above is a make-uped/photoshopped pict of DJ, classical pianist, musical maestro Gavin Castleton in honor of Halloween. Scared yet? Figures that his new album "Home" (out 2009) is a rock opera with zombies and ladybugs in it. Regardless, if you are putting together a halloween playlist, this track is appropriate: It sounds like a mix between Hot Chip and Cut Copy, with the vocals of Justin Timberlake trying to impersonate Michael Jackson in "Thriller". What? All we gotta say is if you want to dance surrounded by mummies, goblins and a lot of chicks dressed as wanna-be Sarah Palin, you better come prepared with a track that makes people want to break out their dance moves. So check it below.
(Ps if you dig this track, the "Unparallel Rabbits" single from Gavin Castleton’s upcoming full length, Home, for available for free download today on I-Tunes as well.)

Our French bros at Institubes are coming correct with a great slice of slowed-down house music—Das Glow’s new b-side “Lite Brite.” While definitely calling to mind the hokie futurism of the famed Hasbro toy, the great thing about this track is its good-vibery, all major chords and spastic crinkles. Head to the Institubes RCRD LBL blog for their always-insightful story about the track, and head to iTunes to pick up the A-Side, a scratchy rager called "Sunburnt.”

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Picture Picture - Liftoff + IV Day
October 29, 2008

If their MySpace friends are anything to go by, Picture Picture are nestled pretty nicely in the Brooklyn nu-psych scene that’s birthed MGMT, Yeasayer, and Chairlift. Yet where those bands have opted for more traditional instrumentation and slight plays on specific genres (psychedelic, funk, and pop, respectively) Picture Picture seem like they can’t find enough stuff to throw into their songs. “Liftoff” begins with an off-tempo blues sample that’s then doused in squirming moogs, autotuned falsettos and enough jagged editing to make your skull shake. It’s heady, for sure, but it’s also strangely enjoyable, never once seeming complacent or cliché, unless to be ironically so. “IV Day” is your more straight-forward option, with some steadier tempos, calming Rhodes, and (thank god) less autotune. These guys didn’t get the warmest reception at CMJ—they’ve posted some hilarious negative reviews from their showcase on their MySpace blog—and that’s fine, because this isn’t really stuff that can be pulled off live unless you do a whole Tough Alliance-aping lip synch set that scares the pants of anyone with a serious conscience. But, for those that want to start their day off weird, download away.

CMJ: FEATURED: Day 4 (Saturday) Of The Levi’s®/FADER Fort NYC
October 29, 2008

(Little Boots / Photo: Diana Levine)
Saturday’s line-up at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort boasted some pretty diverse but equally mind-melting sets from Charles Hamilton, Wild Yaks, Dungen, and our friend Little Boots and as always, The FADER have some great photos up of the insanity. While you’re there, peep around for some great live video from last week’s peformances, with more to go up as the week goes on. We’ve also rounded up all the tunes we’ve got from bands that played the space and you can find those below. So with all this together we’re basically just one step away from creating a Second Life version of our experience last week. Maybe next year?

Now that CMJ is over, we are gearing up for Halloween and seek eerie tracks to get us in the spooked-out mood. The Melbourne-based band Mission Control (not to be confused with the Boston-based band of the same name) is just that: shoe-gazey and sublime, eerie and ominous. Raph Brous whispers lyrics with intonation of a serial killer in a dark alley. The rest of the band use guitars like synths (and vice versa) to promote a futuristic, atmospheric tone. I think they describe it best by saying their first gig was a "Bladerunner soundtrack, Klaus Dinger, Vangelis and 80s Pink Floyd cut into the theme from Dr Who."
